ANNOUNCEMENTS OF THE APOSTOLIC PREFECTURE

  • On the evening of Saturday, November 26th, the liturgical period called Advent begins. Advent (from lat. adventus – advent) in the Catholic Church is the time preceding the Nativity of Christ and beginning the new liturgical year. Advent is a time of reverent and joyful expectation, which has a double meaning: it is a period of preparation for the celebration of Christmas, but at the same time it is a time when the souls of the faithful turn to the expectation of the Second Coming of Christ at the end of time. During the Advent period, the Church Calls on believers to do works of mercy and to repentance. Strict fasting during this period is not prescribed, however, the Church strongly recommends that every Catholic think about what in his life most of all distracts him from God, from prayer, and also hinders his spiritual growth and refuse it with the help of Sacraments for a more complete spiritual preparation for the Christmas holiday.  The traditional symbol of this period of the liturgical year is the Advent wreath. Believers can bring their wreaths to the church  for consecration on the evening of Saturday, November 26th or Sunday November 27th. You can learn about what the Advent wreath should be like after the Mass from the priests or at catechetical classes.
  • We inform you that the Apostolic Nuncio to Azerbaijan, Archbishop Marek Solchinsky is arriving in Baku next week. His Excellency will lead the service of the Holy Mass on the First Sunday of Advent, at 11:00 am in the Church of the Immaculate Conception.
